9/11: A terror that struck everywhere

Terrorism is an unwanted reality in society that leaves many people fearing for their lives on a daily basis. Many countries around the world, including Iraq, are left at the mercy of these terrifying crimes that are committed within the boundaries of their cities. Not only do these acts of violence leave a large number of people either injured or dead, but they leave a lasting imprint on the city or country with scars that could never be healed.

The events of September 11, 2001, left the world speechless when two large commercial aircraft, reprehended by terrorists, flew into the twin towers leaving a destructive path behind. The first plane, flight 11, hit the north tower at 8:45 am with 92 people on board. It struck the tower between the 94th and 98th floors blocking any possible exits for those persons who were trapped above. The smoke was so intolerable and the fire was so hot that numerous amounts of people jumped to their deaths to avoid being burned alive. The second plane, flight 175, hit the south tower at approximately 9:03 am with 65 people aboard. It struck the tower between the 78th and 84th floors, again, completely blocking any exit strategy off for the persons above the targeted area in the building. Fortunately, the floors below the site of impact began evacuating before both towers collapsed. However, many people were still nearby when the south tower began collapsing at 9:50am trapping the not so fortunate people between tons of concrete and rubble. The north tower also collapsed at 10:29 am causing even more chaos with a large number of emergency workers being lost to this tragic event as well. There were over two thousand lives lost to the collapsing of both towers and many families were left broken with loved ones lost forever in the aftermath of this terribly event in history.

Not only were the towers attacked on this destructive day in history, but so was the pentagon which was hit with another commercial aircraft, flight 77, at 9:40 am with 64 people aboard. Upon crashing into the building, 5 hijackers took over the plane 35 minutes into the flight by storming the cock pit and forcing passengers into the rear of the plane. While all the chaos was taking place, some passengers were able to contact loved ones to bid their farewells while relaying information of the hijacking. Along with the 64 passengers aboard the aircraft, 125 other people also perished in the crash. The image to the right shows the destructive aftermath of the crash that left a fire burning for days while firefighters tried to put it out.

Even through these three crashes was a forth plane, flight 93, that was hijacked by terrorists at roughly the same time as the others, with a target of either the white house or state capital building. However, it did not make any of these prescribed targets as a revolt broke out on the plane with passengers fighting and resisting the hijacking. The plane unfortunately was crashed by the hijackers in an attempt to stop the breaching of the cock pit form the angry mob on board. It went down east of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania unsuccessfully making its target crash.

The events of September 11th 2001 show just how sick terrorists can be to sacrifice their own lives, while killing hundreds along with them, just to bring havoc upon a nation. The violence in our world is accelerating at an alarming rate with suicide bombings taking place in many countries to this day. Innocent civilians are dying on a daily basis as a result of these disgusting crimes and I believe drastic measures must be made. Fighting and war between nations is a deadly reality that doesn't seem to have an easy solution but if Nation's could just co-exist without being so discriminative, biased, and hateful, than more changes and solutions could be made. Our world is becoming a more frightening place by the day and if the right measures or precautions are not taken, another war may soon become a deadly reality. We must fight for what we believe in and make our world a more peaceful place so future generations will not have to go through the terror of violence our generations have witnessed. I believe if the right people step up, a huge difference could become a reality, but until then, our world will just have to get by and survive with the many violent crimes that take place in our world today.
